3.2 Managing Digital Tools & Resources

Artifact : WebQuest on my Teacher Website

Candidates effectively manage digital tools and resources within the context of student learning experiences. (PSC 3.2/ISTE 3b)
Creating a WebQuest (ITEC 7445) about early Native American life in Georgia (SS8H1.a) was one of the most memorable experiences that I retained during my multimedia and web design class. I am pretty knowledgeable in terms of web design and the creation and usages of web design, but this was my first time ever creating a WebQuest. With that, there were many digital tools and resources that I was response for to engage students within their educational learning opportunities.
I wanted to start the WebQuest with the student’s learning as my main objective. As a web designer it is important for me to ensure that the website itself has a certain level of professionalism and respectability, and I believe that I was able to create a WebQuest to not only meet my expectations, but to challenge each of my students to achieve the WebQuest’s objectives and goals. Through the effective Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate (ADDIE) design method, I was able to manage the digital tools and resources available to me at the time of the WebQuest creation. For the lesson, I reserved the laptop cart so that all students could be engaged within the WebQuest at all times.
Below are all of the digital tools used I managed in this WebQuest.
• Audio (mp3) Directions – created audio directions to guide students through each step and task
• Digital Graphic Organizers – organized digital documents for students to sort and chart information either online or in printed form
• Blog Posts – I created and implemented a student blog section where students were to blog about the standard as if they lived during that time period
• Google Presentations – I shared a template with my students through Google Classroom so that they could create a collaborative Google Presentation and present it
• YouTube Playlist – I searched YouTube to find standard specific videos and created a playlist which I then embedded into the WebQuest so that students could watch specific videos on the standard to obtain further knowledge
• Google Doc – My team and I created a Study Guide and made it available for all students online for the upcoming test
• Google Presentation Lesson – Our team created an online lesson where students can obtain knowledge from teacher created content
• Digital Rubric – I created a rubric and shared it with all students in Google Classroom and made it available in the WebQuest itself so students know what is expected at all times
• The Website – I created my own teacher website and managed to create the WebQuest itself into it as it now resides on my teacher website, http://www.ExceedTheStandard.com
I learned that although students like working with technology, they do not necessarily like working with multiple forms of it on the same lesson. I may have tried to include too many opportunities for learning, and could have, as suggested, trimmed it down so it was easier for the students to know what to do. So, with that understanding, I plan on changing the one or all of the tasks required in this WebQuest to make it more enjoyable for the students while still keeping the integrity of the lesson intact.
Students had wonderful test results on this standard which was encouraging because this was my first WebQuest and this project was the only method in which the students obtained knowledge on this particular standard. The WebQuest was impactful as it not only was a successful method of student engagement for my students, but for the other students in our 8th grade team as well. The impact of the actual WebQuest can be assessed by the students actually asking for another one later on in the year. They were asking to learn. Although I had no intentions of making another WebQuest at that time, we did find some online during the rest of that school year and implemented those as partial lessons.
