Artifacts: My Field Experiences
|
Candidates engage in appropriate field experiences to synthesize and apply the content and professional knowledge, skills, and dispositions identified in these standards. (PSC 6.3)
Learning from the designed classes for this Specialist degree program in Instructional Technology at Kennesaw State University contained depth and breadth and truly has prepared me for my future journey as an instructional technology specialist. One of the major reasons why I feel prepared is due to the numerous field experiences required throughout the program. Each field experience expected me to synthesize and apply the content and professional knowledge, skills, and dispositions within the structured and unstructured logs.
It should also be noted that there are specific School Level Field Experiences as noted above on the left. These logs directly target specific grade levels while I worked with students and teachers throughout the many different field experiences. The DIVERSE Field Experiences target a low SES school, ELL learners, and students who require assistive technology. One specific field experience I would like to highlight is the Structured Field Experience for ITEC 7430 – Internet Tools in the Classroom. This field experience was awesome! I had been trying to move my school/district away from Microsoft Office for some time now, and this project helped with that quest. It was a successful journey into our new Google Apps for Education solution and from the data collected at the end of this project, the students agreed that the lesson was beneficial. The thing that I will take away from this project in terms of technology facilitation and leadership is that planning is essential to ensure there will be limited amounts of roadblocks. Even when the lesson doesn’t go to plan, the plan itself should have a Plan B to keep the project/lesson going. This field experience required more initial planning that I expected and took a few teachers and our lead technology person to make it all come together. I had knowledge of Google and what it had to offer so that I could plan this lesson accordingly, and collaboratively. Having a positive attitude and enthusiasm for this project made the entire process enjoyable for everyone involved. I believe this needs to be the backbone of any technology leader, as this is not necessarily the same attitude that all others will have. The field experience had a direct impact on student learning within my classroom. Students were challenged to achieve their greatest potential in an online research project and were able to help each other through the writing process, as required. It also made some students who normally would never share their writing, find comfort in this new online method of sharing. They found out that they are great writers and that all students in the class can learn from each other. It really was an eye opening experience for some of them and a few have even come out of their ‘shell.’ The impact has been felt in other English and Georgia Studies classrooms by students and teachers hearing about this project. By working through this field experience, and all of the field experience logs, I was able to provide an overview of my ability to synthesize and apply the content and professional knowledge, skills, and dispositions identified and learned throughout my Specialist Program at KSU in the ITEC program. |
